NFL Tight Ends

By motle July 4th, 2008

Antonio Gates, Witten, Winslow and Gonzalez will be the top four tight ends selected in virtually every fantasy draft this year. And they should be. Sure, there are plenty of good tight ends nowadays, and they all have various abilities, but this Foursome stands out because of their talent and consistency. I still rank Gates above the rest mainly because of his scoring ability. However, he’s no longer a clear-cut No. 1, especially when you factor in the foot injury he suffered in the playoffs last year.

Winslow is the best after the catch and might have the most upside. Gonzalez, perhaps the best tight end of all-time, led all tight ends in passes thrown to, receptions and yards last season. Witten was second in receptions and yards and is a favorite of QB Tony Romo. Really, these guys aren’t traditional tight ends — they’re receivers. They should be viewed as such and drafted accordingly. Don’t let preconceived notions about “drafting a tight end too early” cause you to miss out. This group will likely be gone before Round 6.

I’m taking Gates, Witten, Winslow, Gonzo in that order this year.
