Shortstops

By motle February 19th, 2008

EDIT: Don’t get fooled by these slick fielding guys. Yes, they are the staple of the infield but in almost all fantasy leagues the glove work does you no good. Pick the offensive stat guys.

Here they are : (runs, hits, hr, rbi, sb projections)

1- Jose Reyes- This is the real deal of fantasy shortstops. Reyes can flat out play. His projection by Fantasy Bits are 124-197-16-72-84. Don’t forget this is an offensive team that can put up numbers quickly and it all starts with Reyes. Jose has got to be the first five picks.

2- Hanley Ramirez- Can’t believe I left him off…so retarded sometimes. This guy is possibly better for fantasy baseball than Reyes. He can do it all but let’s see if the absence of Cabrera will make a real change.

3- Jimmy Rollins- Rollins help alot of fantasy players over the top last year and on to first place. He wasn’t expected to be a good as he turned out. Fantasy points were abounding from him. We have him projecting at 132-201-25-90-39. Some leagues may want him over Reyes. What’s your pleasure?

4- Derek Jeter- the field falls off here but not dramatically. Jeter is a good play for most leagues and is a first 3 round type player that projects at 105-195-16-78-17. If you end up with Jeter as your first shortstop do not despair. He will be a very good player.

5- Michael Young- Another fall off on the position here from the 3 spot to #4. Young is a good play and has decent numbers. I look for him in Round 5 late or early 6. Projections about Fantasy Bits staff finds Young at 90-203-13-99-11.

6- Troy Tulowitzki- Tulo burst onto the scene and now has a contract that can give him some security. Sometimes that works in reverse for fantasy players. Round 7 for this guy. Numbers in Coors project out at 99-187-31-97-5 .

Rest of the best: This was difficult as #5 could have been any one of these guys.

Miguel Tejada

Carlos Guillen

Rafael Furcal

Orlando Cabrera

Julio Lugo

I’d probably put Tulo ahead of Young… But they will end with similar numbers. Reyes is heads above the rest although Rollins gave him a run last year. Rollins has a little setback this year though i say.

Is there a reason you left Hanley off the list?

LOL… Can’t believe i overlooked that too. Hanley stays behind reyes for now.
